China, Pursuing Strategic Interests, Builds Presence in Antarctica

Wilson Center Global Fellow Anne-Marie Brady discusses China's increased presence in Antarctica in a New York Times article by Jane Perlez.

Anne-Marie Brady, a professor of political science at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and the author of a soon-to-be-released book, 鈥淐hina as a Polar Great Power,鈥 said Chinese scientists also believed they had a good chance of finding mineral and energy resources near the site.

鈥淐hina is playing a long game in Antarctica and keeping other states guessing about its true intentions and interests are part of its poker hand,鈥 she said. But she noted that China鈥檚 interest in finding minerals was presented 鈥渓oud and clear to domestic audiences鈥 as the main reason it was investing in Antarctica.
