Overview

Two months after former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo was impeached and arrested after attempting to dissolve Congress, Peru鈥檚 political crisis is unresolved. More than 60 Peruvians have died amid nationwide anti-government demonstrations that are demanding early elections and constitutional reform. The violence is imposing enormous economic costs and bludgeoning Peru鈥檚 infrastructure, tourism sector and international image.

So far, Peru鈥檚 leaders appear far from any agreement on a way out of this perilous stalemate. Peruvian lawmakers have rejected nine proposals to hold early elections, not scheduled to take place until 2026. The political and social chaos has distracted Peru from addressing chronic challenges, including persistent inequality, high levels of public corruption and deep mistrust in public institutions.

Please join 澳门六合彩鈥檚 Latin American Program for a conversation on the Peruvian crisis featuring former President of Peru Francisco Sagasti and former President of Colombia Iv谩n Duque, on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. ET.
