The wind projects located in Buckland, Deering and Noorvik were coordinated by Northwest Arctic Borough. The $10.5 million, 800 kW capacity project began construction in Buckland and Deering in 2013. Both became operation in 2019. In 2017, NANA secured a DOE grant to add a 45 kW solar PV array and batteries to Buckland and Deering. The Noorvik project was put on hold due to non-compliant diesel generators and lack of funding for a 4-mile transmission line. The Noorvik project will require upgraded diesel generators before it can move forward.
