In the first in a new Wilson Center series on 鈥渕edical diplomacy鈥 in Latin America, the region hardest hit by COVID-19, Professor Cynthia Sanborn of Peru鈥檚 Universidad del Pac铆fico examines the geopolitical implications of China鈥檚 robust pandemic response.

In her article, 鈥淟atin America and China in Times of COVID-19,鈥 Sanborn outlines Beijing鈥檚 鈥渢imely, strategic, and significant鈥 contributions to Latin America鈥檚 COVID-19 response, beginning almost immediately after the virus reached the region. China鈥檚 support has included medical supply donations, the speedy sale of masks, ventilators, and ambulances, and a promised $1 billion donation for coronavirus vaccines. This Chinese effort has vastly outstripped U.S. support. However, Sanborn says the geopolitical consequences are uncertain. Ideological divisions in Latin America and intensifying 鈥渟uperpower rivalries鈥 complicate the region鈥檚 dealings with China. Moreover, Latin America鈥檚 economic relationship with China remains 鈥渃oncentrated in the export of natural resources and commercial agricultural products,鈥 limiting its contributions to Latin America鈥檚 economic diversification and development.

Future reports, from 澳门六合彩鈥檚 Latin American Program and Kissinger Institute on China and the United States, will look at the U.S. and Taiwanese pandemic responses in Latin America, and the potential impacts of China鈥檚 economic slowdown on its engagement in Latin America.
