Date & Time

Friday

11:30am聽鈥撀1:00pm ET

Overview

China鈥檚 overseas financing is a distinct form of capital that marshals the country鈥檚 vast domestic resources to create commercial opportunities internationally.聽 China's long-term risk tolerance and lack of policy conditionality has allowed developing countries聽to sidestep the fiscal austerity and other conditionality聽of Western lenders聽and international development banks.聽 In Latin America,聽what have been the impacts of聽China's state-led capitalism, and the costs and benefits of state versus market approaches to development?聽 How does China's "patient capital" affect governance and related issues of transparency聽across the Americas? How will聽Chinese leaders react to the ongoing struggles of Latin American countries聽with debt and dependency?

The Latin American Program, the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States, the Mexico Institute, and the Brazil Institute discussed聽these issues in light of a new book by former Wilson Center Fellow聽Stephen B. Kaplan,聽.
