Overview

Due to the inclement weather, the event recording is partially incomplete.听While corruption and impunity have long been major challenges faced by Central American nations, only recently is there evidence that steps can be taken to turn the tide. 听The UN-affiliated CICIG in Guatemala contributed to a corruption investigation that lead the President and Vice President to resign, loose their impunity, and face prosecution. 听Meanwhile, Honduras and El Salvador are developing their own more limited mechanisms to combat corruption.听Join us for a lively discussion about the CICIG experience in Guatemala and its relevance to other efforts in the region to confront corruption. 听We will begin with a presentation of the International Crisis Group鈥檚 latest report, 鈥,鈥 followed by commentary from representatives from the United Nations, U.S. Department of State, and Government of El Salvador.听
