Mexico’s New Energy Reform: Facts, Details, and Possibilities
In 2013, former Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto’s flagship energy reform opened the doors for private companies to compete in Mexico’s previously nationalized energy market, allowing companies to compete for both consumers and extraction of resources. Now, current President López Obrador (AMLO) has proposed what many feel is a “counter-reform” in an attempt to strengthen state-owned companies and stabilize consumer prices.
In this video, the Mexico Institute explains the details of the new energy reform, as well as explores its implications on Mexico’s climate commitments, development into greener, more cost-efficient technologies, and market competition.
