Overview

聽聽Economic crises in Brazil and Venezuela, two of the largest economies in the Mercosur trading bloc, have renewed questions about the future of South American integration. This is especially true in light of alternative models such as the Pacific Alliance. With Argentina under new leadership and Brazil in the midst of an impeachment process, Mercosur鈥檚 fundamentals are being re-examined as never before.聽In Argentina and the World: Keys to Successful Integration (La Argentina y el mundo: claves de una integraci贸n exitosa) Argentine author and entrepreneur Francisco de Santiba帽es argues that Argentina can fully develop only through broad insertion into the international system. Santiba帽es proposes 鈥渋ntelligent鈥 trade liberalization, the improvement of relations with other countries, and the positioning of Buenos Aires as a bridge between Mercosur and the Pacific Alliance.聽What obstacles need to be overcome for Argentina to play the role envisioned by the author? What, if any, steps is the government of President Mauricio Macri taking in pursuit of other options? 聽聽
