Little more than a decade after it was a synonym for devastating conflict Bosnia 鈥 Herzagovina is a candidate for European Union membership. If successful, it will help anchor the Balkans region more securely in the European community. There are major obstacles that Bosnia will have to overcome to gain EU admission. Strengthening its constitutional guarantee of democracy and providing greater support for minority rights are two of their main challenges. Nida Gelazis explains both the problems Bosnia faces and the way they might be overcome.
